Essay Outline Template
Most weak essays are well written. They just aren’t arguing anything.
A paragraph can be fluent and still not know what it’s for. Outlining fixes that before you’ve invested in sentences you’ll be reluctant to cut - you can see, in one screen, whether each body paragraph actually advances the thesis or merely sits near it. This template maps the argument as cards, then opens each one into the writing.
What’s in the essay outline template
Eight sections, plus six essay-type layouts.
• The Question: The prompt restated in your own words, which is where misreadings get caught.
• Thesis Statement: One arguable sentence. If nobody could disagree with it, it isn’t a thesis.
• Roadmap: The order of your argument, and why it’s in that order.
• Body Paragraph Cards: One card per paragraph - topic sentence, evidence, analysis, and the link back to the thesis.
• Evidence & Sources: Quotes, data and citations attached to the paragraph that uses them.
• Counterargument & Rebuttal: The strongest objection, taken seriously. The section that separates a good essay from a competent one.
• Conclusion: What follows from the argument, rather than a summary of it.
• Word Budget: A target per section, so the introduction doesn’t eat a quarter of the essay.
• Essay Types: Five-paragraph, argumentative, persuasive, compare and contrast, analytical or literary, and cause and effect - each with its own paragraph structure.
Why outline your essay in Skrib?
• See the Argument at Once: Every paragraph as a card on one Board, so a body paragraph that doesn’t serve the thesis is visible rather than suspected.
• Reorder Before You Commit: Move paragraphs while they’re still one line each, not after you’ve written four hundred words you’re attached to.
• The Card Opens Into the Essay: Click a paragraph card and write it in the Draft, with the outline still beside you.
• Sources Where You Need Them: Upload readings and PDFs to the Library and keep them one click from the claim they support.
• Every Draft Kept: The version before your tutor’s feedback, and every version since.
• Export to .docx: Hand it in, or take it into whatever your institution requires.
• Proof It Was You: Skrib is building HAAS - a record of the writing as it happens, so authorship is demonstrable.
