Three-Act Structure Example: A Full Story Broken Down Act by Act
Everyone has heard of the three-act structure: beginning, middle, end. What helps is seeing it filled in for a real story, beat by beat. This guide does exactly that for our mystery novel Low Water, mapped on the free Three-Act Structure board in Skrib.
Low Water in one line: when the lowest tide in fifty years uncovers her brother's car, a harbourmaster must prove he wasn't driving before the town closes the case.
Act I: Setup (about 25%)
The sticky note: Nell stops accepting the story everyone agreed on.
- Exposition. Nell Carrow runs the harbour at Saltley. Twenty years ago the town decided her brother Danny drove drunk into the sea.
- Inciting incident. The lowest spring tide in fifty years uncovers Danny's car. His seat belt is buckled behind the seat.
- First turning point. Nell finds a second set of keys in the glovebox and refuses to let the coroner close the case.
Act I ends when the character commits and can't go back.
Do it in Skrib: every beat is a scene card with a value change (calm to unsettled) and a conflict line (Nell vs the official story). Fill in those two lines and the tension of the act is visible at a glance.
Act II: Confrontation (about 50%)
The sticky note: The truth points at the town's most trusted man.
- Rising action. She traces the keys while the town closes ranks. Her mother won't say Danny's name.
- Midpoint. The keys belong to the lifeboat station. The only other keyholder in 2006 was Tom Ashby, now the mayor.
- Second turning point. Tom produces a letter in Danny's hand saying he meant to leave. Nell is suspended.
Act II is the longest act. The midpoint changes what the story is about: from grief to a hunt.
Act III: Resolution (about 25%)
The sticky note: One last low tide, and a confession.
- Pre-climax. The letter is on paper the lifeboat station only stocked after 2006. It is a fake.
- Climax. At the next low tide she walks Tom out to the wreck. He admits he was driving.
- Resolution. Danny's name is cleared. For the first time in twenty years, Nell leaves the harbour.
