These are the ranges agents and publishers usually expect for a debut. Established authors get more room.

How long should a chapter be?
Most chapters run 1,500 to 5,000 words, and 2,000 to 3,500 is the comfortable middle. Thrillers lean short. Literary fiction leans long. What matters more than length is that each chapter ends with something changed, so the reader turns the page.
How many chapters in a book?
Divide your target by your chapter length. An 85,000 word novel with 3,000 word chapters has about 28 chapters. Anywhere from 20 to 40 is normal.
How to structure a book
Start with three acts: setup (about 25%), confrontation (50%) and resolution (25%). For an 85,000 word book that is roughly 21,000, 42,000 and 21,000 words. Then place the big turning points and fill each act with chapters.
